Happy Holidays with Conan!

I was planning to make a painting with a holiday theme but at the end, painting brutal hack and slash was more fun. =) This was a fun exercise and it really scratched my itch of doing a Frazetta inspired Conan.

Cammy

Here is a picture of Cammy in the desert. No idea why she is there but desert scenes tends to be easier to work on when you don't have much time. Enjoy!

Spider-woman on a '97 Camry

She has been away for awhile and so was I. In brief this image started with a rejected SW sketch that I brought back to tinker with. I wanted to try out an animated style but the finished piece without some context or background was lacking interest. I decided to do a rainy scene so I bought in an older photo that I took in Chinatown to quickly pull the idea together. I did a bit of processing to get the right feel and focus. Next I added rain drops effect, added rain as well as comping in some background and foreground mist. The color of the figure had to be tweaked to match the scene. I added a cheap reflection on the hood where she is kneeling using a inverted copy of the figure. Lastly I added blown out lights for the background and punched up the contrast of the figure by adding some rim lighting. Originally I was targetting 1/2 hour to complete a quick color sketch but at the end I probably spent about 2 hours and change on this piece.

Boar-ish head

I'm supposed to draw a super cartoonish boar creature later today so I started by drawing a more realistic one to wrap my brain around it...:)

I wish I was alive too.

Do I still need to type here too? Can't I just post the image and be done with it?

My entry for Sam Hiti's Fist-A-Cuffs blog. An art blog that pitts people's creations against each other, tournament style!

from the site: Ok FACA-ers... Here is the call out to make an FACA Arena-Girl. I will post them above mine, and everyone will vote for the top 12 best- who will then hold the cards for the upcoming FACA4 matches.

so yknow, vote for me if you want! And if you're so inclined, enter a challenger for the next tournament!

Batman Commission

UPDATE! I've added a process sequence over on my blog: http://raylederer.blogspot.com/2007/10/batman-process.html

Here's the final for the commission piece. I spent way to long on this. I learned much from it that I hope to apply to more interesting subjects later...:)

This was the section I enjoyed the most. I was able to play with textures in some unexpected ways...

I picked up some good things from this. Eh... I don't know... hopefully the next one won't be so ham fisted. Thanks for looking! -R

Batman or Bust

A quick study for a Batman commission. I'm not settled on this one and may do something a bit more action oriented if I have time. Mostly I'm figuring out how I'd like to handle the costume. Eventually I need to do a Gouache version so I don't want to run out of time iterating but I can definitely do better.

Shading:

1) Adding depth to a piece of art by realistically darkening specific areas

Light side... er.. um... meat?

ok I'll work through lunch for this little bit of fun...:)

The other, other, green meat

Force Lightning cooked over an open Sarlac pit.

This week's challenge: Yoda Meat

From Clayton's 4 year old. Pure genius:

'We were sitting at the table having dinner last night when my 4 year old said, “We should have Yoda meat some time.” After I was done laughing (and explaining the limitations of the meat department at Albertsons), I was thinking that might make a good challenge for the unleaded blog… assuming Lucas doesn’t sue us or something. It’s just a thought. I wanted to share that golden memory with you anyway.'

YODA MEAT!!!!

my theory

Let's just go with common sense for a change. All the clues are there people!

My personal obsession

I'll let the man himself say it:

"They were not composed altogether of flesh and blood. They had shape...but that shape was not made of matter. When the stars were right, They could plunge from world to world through the sky; but when the stars were wrong, They could not live. But although They no longer lived, They would never really die. They all lay in stone houses in Their great city of R'lyeh, preserved by the spells of mighty Cthulhu for a glorious resurrection when the stars and the earth might once more be ready for them...:"

Cthulhu waits to reap your soul!

That distant roar was of course the deep rumbling of Cthulhu's maw that embodies infinite disparity and hopelessness. He also has an umbrella to keep the rain off his head.

After I saw your image I went frame by frame and discovered this image. You're so on the money Paul!

You know damn well its just another kids movie

I heard a faint "i love you" in the roaring from the trailer, didn't you?

CHALLENGE II: 1-18-08 Monster

Check out this trailer from the new JJ Abrams movie (creator of Lost and Alias) and come up with a visual what the monster could look like. You can take this in a variety of directions. It can be completely realistic or stylized, serious or funny.

Couple of things that were mentioned in the trailer that could help:
-its huge
-its alive
-animalistic roar
-strong enought to decapitate Lady Liberty

Late to the Party

I had planned to have a very complicated scene here but as usual I was time challenged. Until 2 1/2 hours ago, this was a pencil drawing. I almost submitted it too but I felt guilty since everyone turned in color paintings. It was almost an X-rated painting too. I just didn't have the guts so repositioned the chick on the steps lower to make it more family friendly. Heh.
